Another problem with late assignment of classes is room assignments. I am happily assigned three courses for the next semester with 15 minutes between each course however, I am in three different rooms. I am suppose to answer student questions after class and then make it to a new room and set up wonderful learning activities in 15 minutes. It would be so much nicer to stay in the same classroom at least when the course being taught is the same as the previous class.

I agree one hundred percent that students should know who will be teaching their classes and adjuncts should know their class schedule more than 2 weeks before the semester starts. One concern that I feel should be remedied rather quickly by the college is the fact that students can't find us on the staff directory. This has caused many issues for my students and me because they can't contact me and I am finding myself bending the rules I have established to accommodate those who say they "couldn't find me".
More than anything I would like to see adjunct assignments be provided for the academic year (Fall and Winter semesters). I feel this would eliminate many issues including; adjuncts unsure of their schedules, students unsure of their instructors as well as the delay in pay. My personal preference would be to know my schedule for the academic year and be paid evenly throughout the academic year (without delays or lapses) even if I was teaching 10 contact hours in the Fall and 12 in the Winter. I know issues arise with this but I think a fair compromise could be reached.

I agree Lynne. Not only does the adjunct class assignment process create uncertainty and difficulties for the adjuncts, it lacks any student focus what so ever. I believe the system should be improved.

RE: Assignment of classes
I think students should have the right to know who will be teaching a course when they sign up for the course. I would love earlier assignment of courses which I feel the College is working on.

This isn't about an adjunct faculty member, but it''s the same problem.

Re: private offices for adjuncts.

Just recently, adjuncts have been given access to private office space to use for student conferences or other private business. The offices are directly across the hall from the Adjunct Faculty office area in COOK 542. I think our access (I am an adjunct in the Department of English) to these rooms is a step in the right direction; at least I have a place to speak with students in a confidential environment.

Now... the next step --> adjuncts are assigned their own offices. As an adjunct at Ferris State University, I have my own room.It is a place I can get work done, take a break from teaching, and conduct student conferences. Because it's assigned to me, I am free to personalize with plants, pictures, and mirrors, and other personal touches that reflect my individuality, thus lending a sense of belonging. Granted, Ferris does not have the number of adjuncts that GRCC does, but still... anything is possible!

I've been told that, if you're switching to MESSA choices, you have to check "Non-PAK HEALTH COVERAGE" on the MESSA application and write in "Choices."
